Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu Observes July Shaheed Dibosh 2026

Kathmandu, July 17: The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu observed “July Shaheed Dibosh-2026” on Thursday, commemorating the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the July Mass Uprising of 2024.

The event was organized with solemnity and respect at the Bangladesh Embassy, featuring religious prayers, messages from Bangladesh’s President and Prime Minister, documentary screenings, and discussions highlighting the significance and background of the July Movement.

The program began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of official messages from Bangladesh’s top leadership on the occasion. A documentary highlighting the context and impact of the July Mass Uprising was also screened, while a special prayer was held for the souls of those who lost their lives during the movement.

A discussion session was organized as part of the program, attended by members of the Bangladeshi community in Nepal, Bangladeshi students, representatives from think tanks and research institutions, distinguished guests, and Nepali youth representatives.

Addressing the gathering, Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the historical significance of the July Mass Uprising 2024 and paid tribute to the fighters who, according to the embassy, played a key role in bringing an end to the previous authoritarian government through a 36-day movement.

The ambassador said the uprising reflected public anger over issues including discrimination, corruption, enforced disappearances, killings, denial of voting rights, repression, and what he described as authoritarian rule. He particularly praised the involvement of young people and Generation Z students, calling them key drivers of social and political transformation in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Rahman expressed hope that the spirit of the July Uprising would continue to inspire Bangladesh in its efforts toward peace, justice, and inclusive development.

The event also featured remarks from Dr. Pramod Jaiswal, Research Director of Nepal Institute for International Cooperation and Engagement (NIICE) and Guest Speaker at Bangladesh University of Professionals; Dr. Foyasal Khan, Founder and CEO of Dhaka-based think tank Policy House; and Tanvir Ahmed Tarafder, Director of the SAARC Secretariat.

The guests were also served traditional Bangladeshi cuisine during an early dinner hosted by the embassy.
